Officials backed by Russia in four occupied regions of Ukraine are holding referendums on joining Russia. Ukraine and the West consider these votes to be illegitimate and a sham. The referendums are occurring over a period of five days while all four areas, two in the east and two in the south, are on the front line of the conflict. This annexation could lead to Russia claiming that its territory is under attack from Western weapons supplied to Ukraine.
