As the Christmas season approaches, many people choose to leave the stress and hustle of daily life behind and spend the holidays in more rural areas, far removed from the internet connection required for things such as work, research and entertainment. However, data from Telefónica Movistar, one of the leading telecommunications companies in Spain, shows that despite these vacationers travelling away from their regular environments, mobile data usage on Christmas day was 20% higher than usual.

The increased demand for mobile data was recorded throughout all of Movistar’s territory, but especially in rural areas outside the cities. In fact, the company reported that the data was used mainly in rural towns and remote countryside areas, regions which typically suffer from a lack of service coverage.

Despite the usage surge, Movistar’s network proved to be reliable and strong, with no hiccups or technicalities reported. The telecommunications service successfully withstood the heavy load of data traffic, providing clear, speedy and reliable coverage throughout both cities and rural areas alike.

It’s not just the rural population that enjoyed the Movistar coverage, however. As is common in any large city, cellular coverage can sometimes be unreliable and congested, yet Telefónica claims that urban areas were more than adequately served, and experienced the same levels of quality during the holidays as the rest of the year.

Interestingly, although people usually associate the holiday season with an increase of video streaming, which tends to consume a lot of data, Movistar reported that the data usage was spread out pretty evenly across multiple services and digital assets. This means that both the reliability and speed of internet connection maintained high performance, regardless of which online service came under the most pressure.

It’s safe to say that Movistar executives had plenty of reasons to feel joyous this Christmas season. The company successfully met the challenge of high demand for mobile data, offering quality service to both rural and urban regions, and setting a positive example for the performance of Spanish telecommunications companies during the holiday season.
