On the 8th of May 2014, in an historic moment, Spain’s Real Oviedo achieved soccer milestone, as defender Ismael Omgba scored the team’s 5000th goal in the Third Division game against Coruxo. This event marks the first time any Spanish professional soccer team has achieved such a feat.
The Oviedo born and raised defender fires the ball into the back of the net during the 79th minute of the match. To the jubilation and awe of the spectators, Omgba ran towards his team while they gave him a standing ovation. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause and the action was seen live on Spanish TV stations.
The start of the match was full of emotional stories from Oviedo’s history. Before the opening whistle a minute of silence was held in remembrance of the 406 people who died when the Aficionados del Oviedo attacking each other on that historic day in 1974.
The match itself was tight, with both sides playing cautiously. Oviedo managed to score the first goal of the night in the 51th minute, when Sergio Palencia found his way to the back of the net. In the second half, with the crowd growing more and more tense, Omgba came in to make the job with this remarkable goal.
This accomplishment is particularly remarkable, with good reason. Real Oviedo is one of the oldest professional soccer teams in Spain, founded in 1926. The team has been a major force in the Spanish soccer scene and was a powerhouse in La Liga before its relegation to the lower leagues in 2012.
To put this achievement in perspective, the next closest Spanish teams in terms of goals scored are Athletic Bilbao and Valencia, who combined have managed to score almost over 50 goals fewer than Omgba’s big moment.
It is clear that May 8th, 2014 was a historic night for Real Oviedo and its fans. The Ismael Omgba goal was of course the biggest highlight of the night, though the significance of that goal in Spanish soccer should not go unnoticed. It is a fantastic accomplishment, and will no doubt be remembered for years to come.
