The Royal Oviedo Football Club is one of the oldest teams in Spain, having been founded in 1926. Since its inception, the club has enjoyed a rich history of success and has been a beloved symbol for its supporters and home city of Oviedo in North-West Spain. The past few seasons have been difficult for Oviedo, relegated to Spain’s third tier, and looking likely to be demoted further if they did not gain promotion this campaign.
However, over recent weeks the team have been enjoying a resurgence and have earned themselves a spot back in the Segunda División A, the second tier of Spanish football. This season’s success has been even more remarkable given the extra challenges they have faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the new regulations it necessitated.
The accomplishment of Oviedo’s players, manager and board of directors has been widely recognised and applauded by fans and members of the media alike. The Mayor of the city of Oviedo, Wenceslao López, was keen to laud their hard work and resilience: “There have been so many heroes throughout this campaign and Oviedo deserve this recognition for everything we have achieved together in such challenging times,” he said.
La Liga President Javier Tebas was also quick to congratulate the team on their achievement, “I’m delighted to see the city of Oviedo rise from the ashes of their relegation last season with the inspirational work they have done in securing promotion. This encapsulates the spirit of Spanish football and has been a beacon of hope, just what the game needs right now”.
The Royal Oviedo Football Club have rightfully earned the respect of their peers and community, with a successful campaign and a triumphant return to Segunda División A. Despite the scale of the challenges they faced, Oviedo have shown that anything is possible with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude.
