Today, Madrid stands in solidarity with Ukraine in a solemn yet powerful act of solidarity – the Palacio de Cibeles and its iconic fountain have been switched off for a minute in a silent yet strong tribute to the country.

The tribute seeks to show Madrid’s support for Ukraine during the current period of political tension, international crisis and the tragic loss of civilian lives. It is an act of solidarity from the people of Madrid to those living in Ukraine, who are currently suffering as a result of political unrest and security issues.

The iconic monument is situated in the heart of the Spanish capital, near some of the city’s busiest streets and most visited attractions. It has come to symbolise Madrid’s identity, and is a true symbol of the city’s past, present and future. To switch off the fountain and lights that adorn the palatial building is a powerful statement, and one that will not be overlooked.

In addition to switching off the lights on the building and the fountain, other monuments around the city, such as the Puerta de Alcalá and the Fuente de los Caballos have also been dark for this minute of reflection.

The tribute is a sign of support from Madrid and its citizens for Ukraine, and a clear demonstration that the city stands with those who suffer in difficult circumstances. It is an honour for Madrid to be able to show its solidarity like this, and our hope is that it will provide a little hope and light in dark times.
